Our Approach

At Rebis, we recognize that behind each diagnosis, there’s a story, and behind each story, there’s a person. That’s why our clinical approach at our practice is deliberately patient-centered. But what does this mean, to have a patient-centered approach?

The Rebis approach means shared decision-making. The clinical diagnostic and therapeutic navigational space of Sleep Medicine is complex. In other words, for a given set of sleep-wake complaints, there may be multiple diagnoses, and for each diagnosis, the rationale as to WHY? it should be treated is a complex conversation all its own.

A complex clinical navigational space benefits from the provider-patient partnership exploring that navigational space together. It’s only when the provider and the patient share an understanding of the complexity of the decision-making space that truly shared decision making can happen. We like to refer to the process as being one of “co-discovery,” a process we hold central to our core mission to guide our patients to awaken, empower, and heal.

Such clinical co-discovery benefits from a structured approach that can be shared throughout the clinic--a common language for the deconstruction of complexity.

In 2021, Rebis Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dave McCarty took a sabbatical from clinical medicine to co-create (with Rebis Chief Science Officer, Dr. Ellen Stothard) the Empowered Sleep Apnea project, an innovative, cross-platform Sleep Medicine educational curriculum delivered with the intent of fostering provider-patient collaborative problem-solving within a complex navigational space.

The Rebis clinical ecosystem embraces two five-point complexity deconstruction tools from the Empowered Sleep Apnea project as part of our clinical co-discovery process. The first of these tools, The Five Finger Approach (FFA), is a collaborative structure for orchestrating the search for root cause explanations for a given set of concerns about the sleep-wake experience.

The FFA opens the pathway for deeper review of medical factors and psychiatric/psychosocial factors contributing to the sleep-wake experience as viewed through the lens of integrative and functional medicine.

To awaken, one must first recognize that a problem exists.

The second tool, The Five Reasons to Treat, pertains to the most common diagnosis we see at Rebis, Sleep Apnea, empowering a careful deconstruction of WHY treatment might be offered, as well as a structured method of reviewing whether said treatment has accomplished the patient’s goals.

Once awakened, our team’s role is to empower you.

These clinical tools create the foundation for a journey of discovery, shared between provider and patient, giving the patient a greater sense of agency and empowerment in the process of moving toward holistic sleep-wake health.

Healing is a shared journey.

At Rebis, we understand the complexity of Sleep Medicine. We understand your humanity.

We’re here to guide you through it.
